About ALVA

The Alliance for Life Sciences, Food, Veterinary Expertise and Agriculture (ALVA)

The “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Landwirtschaftlicher Versuchsanstalten” (Alliance of Agricultural Research Institutions in Austria – ALVA) was originally implemented as a forum of cooperation among Austria’s federal and provincial institutions of agriculture, forestry and water management.

The main basis for interdisciplinary exchange is the annual experts’ conference, traditionally held in a different federal province every year. These conferences are not only attended by the employees of the Austrian organizations ALVA is composed of, but also by colleagues from adjoining countries.

In Austria ALVA is closely connected with University Institutes, similar research institutes operated by different Federal Ministries, cooperative and private enterprises and the Austrian Standards Institute (ASI).

In particular, ALVA maintains friendly relations to the corresponding German Association, the “Verband Deutscher Landwirtschaftlicher Untersuchungs- und Forschungsanstalten” (VDLUFA) – Alliance of German Institutes of Agricultural Research and Investigation.

The wide range of scientific work provided by the experts in agricultural research institutes and laboratories, is represented by so called Expert Groups within the organizational structure of ALVA, Small entities help the specialists to carry out qualified research in their relevant fields.

One of the main objectives of ALVA is to develop and sustain methods of testing and analyzing that can actually be applied by the various research institutes.

This work is also carried out within the Expert Groups.

Due to the difficult legal setup in the institutions involved, which are partly run by the Federal Government, by Provincial Governments or private enterprise, ALVA remained merely a loose platform up to recent years.

In the year 2004, however, the loose network called “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Landwirtschaftlicher Versuchsanstalten” (Alliance of Agricultural Research Institutions in Austria – ALVA) was changed into a registered association and renamed “Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Lebensmittel-, Veterinär- und Agrarwesen – Alliance for Life Sciences, Food, Veterinary Expertise and Agriculture”, thus keeping the ALVA acronym.

The new ALVA commits itself to actively enhance communication and networking among the various fields of expertise mentioned in the new name, to support the interchange of scientific findings within the Expert Groups as well as to encourage national and international knowledge transfer on both scientific and popular scientific bases.
